Walking through the Arboretum, I came across this. In the middle of the path in the reed marsh, a letter A, spelled out of broken reeds. I’m thinking it’s probably a creation of human hands, but there were lots of reedy bits… who knows – maybe a natural coincidence? Either way, between the setting and material, I liked it. I guess lots of other people do too – Flickr has a whole pool of photos of just one letter, and it definitely beats some of the other things I found in the marsh.

Industrial Intrusions in Seattle

Industrial Intrusions in Seattle

The north end of Myrtle Edwards Park in Seattle abuts one of the remaining industrial sites in the area. What is it? Some sort of silo and conveyor system. My friends and I speculate wheat and corn. We have no idea. I love the stark lines and the fact you can actually see some working industry right next to the biotechs and stoners on the waterfront.

The Ever-Wily Black Flag

The Ever-Wily Black Flag

“And here we see the reclusive Black Flag, in it’s natural habitat.”

Seriously though, the Zoo is a great place for pictures of almost everything, even when there are no animals around. I loved the lines and silhouette of this fence. I just keep staring at the picture, and I think it’s because it reminds me of something. Whatever it is, I like.

Gorilla Points The Way

Gorilla Points The Way

This year, all the presents were photo-based. When I talked to my sister, she wanted something to decorate the baby nook. I was thinking animals and simple for the baby and artsy and somewhat interesting for them. This is what I came up with. The second of the two is after the jump and there are a few more that I think would make an even nicer set if I had time to match the background colors. I took the Gorilla about 3 hours earlier than the Elephant and the sun going down really changed the colors. To make them go together I color-matched the background on the Elephant. Seemed to work pretty well on a plain blue sky.

Here’s the other one I sent along with the Gorilla. I think they make a nice set together with both arrows pointed out. As I said there are two more, but I don’t know what to do with the arrow pattern after two, so I figured I’d quit while I was ahead.

Telescope Sight Zoo

Telescope Sight Zoo

Another view of my favorite telescope from yesterday. I broke one of the big rules with this one – the center of focus is right in the middle of the image. Rule of thirds says that’s a no-no and I usually agree. In my defense, however, the edges are in the right place and I love the diagonal lines. I shot this with my macro lens, which is great for close-up detail, but also does a great job separating the subject from the background. Who needs a studio backdrop when a couple feet of shadow gives the same effect? Well, also, I don’t have a studio or a background, so you takes what you can get.

Branch Arch B&W

Branch Arch B&W

Its been a very long time since I’ve thought much about Black and White photography. In the film days everyone started with Black and White, mostly because it’s possible to process by hand without massive expense. I spent several years doing nothing but B&W so I burned out on it for a long time. In the digital age, there is no reason to start in B&W, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have it in your mind. B&W reminds you to think about shapes, shadows, and contrast, which can do magic with pictures that wouldn’t otherwise be special. I’m posting this one with it’s color starting point as well. Which one do you like better?

Snow Lines

Snow Lines

It’s snowing in Seattle. It never snows in Seattle, which means that the city can’t cope with it. Which is the fun part. I went for a walk with friends last night to see what there was to see. Other than an amazing snowball fight, the best pictures were the simple things. It was dark and hard to shoot with falling snow, my tiny 50mm lens and wet gloves so I have a lot of things that might otherwise have been cool. This is a longer exposure, even under the lights, and I love the moving snow crossing the stark and clean power lines. Geometric pictures like this are some of my favorites.
