The Seattle Sculpture Garden is thankfully within walking distance from my work. A great place to browse, watch the security guards watching you, etc. They’ve got some good stuff (although it rarely to never changes) but every time I go, I can’t help but look at those walls framing everything.

Black, White and Modern

I was back in San Diego last week. Especially downtown and along the waterfront, so much has changed since I lived there. I blame Petco Park, but mostly I think it was just the real estate boom.

For all the new, there is still some old. Down in Seaport Village, the Marriott Hotel is still going strong. As much as those new buildings might look nice, this is the only one I wanted to take pictures of.

Birds On A Wire

Even so, finding the right shot can be hard. I wanted the simple lines and symmetry in the wires. Sun should be up but not right overhead. You need some pigeons in there, right? Well I was out shooting radio towers and I just saw this out of the corner of my eye. Want more? Hit the jump for the rest of the post.

As much as I like this shot in color, the fact that it only had about three colors in it and that what drew me to it most was the geometric aspects, I figured I’d try black and white. That seemed a little drab so I duotoned it a sort of warm sepia color. Photoshop makes this really easy and I think I like the results even better. What do you think of this one?

Snow Fountain

Here’s another one from a snowy night at Volunteer Park. Generally I’m a fan of regular objects – one of my favorite pictures I’ve ever taken is of a fire hydrant. For some reason the city saw fit to endow this particular part with extra nice fittings and fixtures, perhaps to match the great Deco look of the Seattle Asian Art Museum. I love the octagonal rim, standing silently at attention, waiting at the ready. I love the glow of the ambient yellow street light (way better than what happens if you use a flash), and I love the bokeh from the f/1.8 lens.
